BIG in the Community

The Port City Chapter of Blacks in Government has a long-standing track record of supporting youth, seniors, and under-represented populations. We believe in improving opportunities for our fellow citizens and the generous support of our sponsors help us to provide donations to assist, up-lift, and encourage.

Donations

Bishop State Community College Scholarship Fund - Port City Chapter has for the past 30 years made contributions to Bishop State’s Scholarship Fund and this year we will continue to keep up that tradition.

Murphy High School JROTC - This is our first welcoming the JROTC. JROTC teaches valuable life skills, promotes good citizenship, and enhances college applications. JROTC helps students develop leadership, self-discipline, and teamwork skills, which are beneficial for any career path.

Alpha Elites Program - The Alpha Elites Service Organization represents a cornerstone mentoring initiative of the local chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated for young men in grades 8th through 12th. Dedicated to promoting scholarship,
leadership, character development and community service, the Alpha Elites Program pursues the ultimate aim of preparing young men to become successful and productive citizens. The program's mission is to positively impact the next generation by implementing relevant programs that prepare them for all aspects of their lives.

Project Faith Breast Cancer Intervention Program - Project Faith is a community-based initiative that strives to make breast cancer screening accessible and affordable while also raising awareness and providing support to those affected by the disease. Project Faith focuses on educating and identifying barriers faced by low-income women and men that prevent them from receiving adequate healthcare.

Project Faith Breast Cancer Intervention Program (Project Faith) was founded in 2012 by Brenda E. Rocker who has survived six stage 4 metastatic breast cancers. Mrs. Rocker has been battling stage 4 metastatic breast cancer for 27 years. 

Key Aspects of Project Faith:

  • Focus on Early Detection.

  • Financial Assistance.

  • Community Outreach.

  • Fundraising.

  • Educational Component.

  • Support for Survivors.

Mobile Public Library - For over 30 years, Port City Chapter has partnered with the Mobile Public Library to provide quality programs to the community. This year and for the past several years we are donating to the Library to help fund the Children’s Summer Reading Program. This Program serves over 40,000 children and offers over 500 free fun educational activities to keep children Reading during the summer.

Holloway School - We have partnered with the school for over 30 years providing uniforms, washer & dryer, shoes, books for the library, and funds for special programs for the children.

Members of the Port City Chapter of Blacks in Government made another stop to deliver the chapter’s donation to Ariel Holloway Elementary School’s clothes closet. The donation purchases belts, socks, and any items the children need for school. Thank you members, President Dr. Reginald Crenshaw, Bernadette Dumas-Hudson, Barbara Johnson, David Clausell.

Boy Scout Troop - The Boy Scouts has honored us with their service for over 18 years. These young men have been our Honor Guards at this breakfast helping to serve the people and doing everything we ask them to do.

Dumas Wesley Community Center - For 121 years, the Dumas Wesley Community Center has been fulfilling its mission to Educate, Empower and Enrich the local community. Dumas Wesley offers over a dozen programs and services meeting the needs of local youth, senior citizens and the homeless. One of the outstanding programs is the “After School Achievement Program”!

Dumas Wesley’s After School Achievement Program (ASAP) has been in existence for over 40 years. The program serves school-age children ages 6-18 in the Crichton, Toulminville and Mobile community. Five days a week, children enjoy a variety of free academic and character-enhancing activities including: homework assistance, STEAM workshops, career exploration, sports activities, special youth-empowered events and a summer program. A daily meal is also provided at no cost to participants.

Whether we're collaborating with community organizations, business leaders, educational institutions, nonprofit partners, or government agencies, supporting career fairs and workforce initiatives, participating in leadership conferences, engaging in civic education efforts, or mentoring the next generation of public servants, we recognize that lasting change happens through collaboration. Every partnership creates new opportunities to serve, connect, and make a meaningful difference in our community.

We are proud to serve as ambassadors for public service while fostering relationships that strengthen our neighborhoods, encourage civic participation, and promote economic and professional growth. Every partnership, every volunteer opportunity, and every community event is another chance to demonstrate the values of Blacks In Government—leadership, integrity, service, and excellence.
